Why do people choose to go into an HVAC/R career? There are plenty of reasons people decide to go into this field. A career in heating, air conditioning and refrigeration is a very hands-on career. If you like working with your hands, this might be a good career for you. It also provides you with the opportunity to help people by installing and fixing their climate control systems. The Huffington post reported on a study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison that showed that people who help people at work are happier. “Our findings make a simple but profound point about altruism: Helping others makes us happier,” said Donald Moynihan, a professor.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers often specialize in either instillation or maintenance. Some of the daily tasks of those in the HVACR field include using blue prints to install, inspect, maintain and repair HVACR systems. Another benefit of working in this field is that the work requires you to travel from place to place. If you do not want to sit in one building all day from eight to five, HVACR offers you more movement and variety of work.

Other than the fact that heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration can be an enjoyable job, it also is a pretty stable job. If you want to have job security, HVACR is a good field to be in. The Bureau of Labor statistics says that many manufacturers and contractors now provide or even require a one year contract for technicians. This helps provide you with peace of mind. Along with job security, there is also a decent wage to be made. According to the BLS, the median pay for HVACR technicians in 2012 was $43,640 per year or $20.98 an hour. The field is also projected to grow 21 percent from 2012 to 2022,which is faster than the average growth for all occupations.
